Franz Winkler is an internationally respected psychiatrist and psychotherapist who has specialized in psychotherapy with men. He studied medicine at the Universities of Nagyvárad (Hungary) and Vienna (Austria), where he received his PhD in 1938 with a dissertation on the relationship between neuroses and personality types. From 1941 to 1945, he served as psychoanalytic staff physician at the psychoanalytic hospital at the University of Vienna—the only time in his professional career that he faced active military service.
