As a volunteer he served as volunteer surgeon during one of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolution at Fort Moultrie, South Carolina. Francis set out on his own as a young man, moving first to Tennessee and then to Texas where he opened a law institute. He became involved in several other successful enterprises including banking, railroads and timber speculation before his death in 1882.
