Farquhar McHarg was born in 1876 and died in 1962. He was a Scottish painter and designer of postage stamps and banknotes. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art, and later became a staff artist at the Bank of Scotland. McHarg worked as a staff artist on the design of all Scottish banknotes from 1920 to 1932. He also produced postage stamps for many countries around the world
His work as a designer led to his appointment as Comptroller of Scottish Charters in 1926 and then Comptroller of Bank Notes and Illustrations in 1935. Though not formally trained as a painter, McHarg was a prolific and inventive illustrator who challenged accepted social attitudes and popular culture through his artwork by depicting subjects such as prostitution, homosexuality, female suffrage, and alcohol.
