Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1899) was an American hymnist who became known as “America’s Mother of Hymns.” She is best known for publishing the hymn “In the Sweet Bye and Bye,” which became a staple of worship services in America. Crosby was born in North Carolina and lived most of her life in Maine. She was a frequent contributor to temperance journals and took part in many campaigns to promote the importance of total abstinence from alcohol
In addition to writing hymns, she served as a speaker and lecturer on temperance issues. In 1864, she was appointed to the Board of Managers for the State Prison for Women in Augusta, Georgia. Later she would be appointed as a trustee for the State Reformatory for Women in West Virginia, where she worked with inmates to improve their living conditions.
