During her first eight years of marriage (1928-1935), she wrote four novels. She published her first book, The Gift of Love, in 1935 with the help of her husband, James Dabney Dunbar. It was an instant success but it took her until 1942 to write another novel.

By then she had two sons and two grandchildren. From 1943 to 1946 she served as editor of Parents magazine and during that period published one novel and one short story collection under the pseudonym Evelyn Dann. After retiring from teaching in 1962, she began writing children's books aimed at preadolescent readers under the name Evelyn Bennett.

She also wrote two more novels during the 1960s, after which time she turned almost exclusively to writing nonfiction books with titles such as The American Family: Its Relationships, Behaviors, Problems and Prospects (1965), A Matter of Love (1968), Sex in America (1973), The American Family Today (1976), The American Family: Lifestyles and Values (1980), How to Live Together (1985), What Your Mother Never Told You About Sex (1988). Dunbar died in St. Louis in 1990 after a long illness at age 81.
