Ernestine Ulmer was born in Vienna, Austria. At the age of three, she moved with her family to the United States. In 1934, she joined the staff at Reader's Digest and wrote numerous articles under a pen name. She published her first novel in 1946 and quickly became a best-selling author
After her retirement from Reader's Digest, she wrote a prolific stream of best-sellers for which she became known as "America's favorite author." Her most famous works were The Secret of Drury House and The House with a Clock in Its Walls. She died in New York City at the age of eighty-eight.
