Ernest Renan, or Ernest Renan l'aîné (1823-1892) was a French essayist, literary critic, historian, theologian, philosopher, and writer. He is most famous for his essay "Napoléon et sa religion" ("Napoleon and his Religion"), which attempted to explain the military genius of Napoleon Bonaparte in terms of religion. It was an immediate success in France in 1853.
