Elbert Hubbard was born in Hartford, Connecticut on June 10, 1861. He became a printer's apprentice at 14 and typographer at 16, working for the publishing house of the New York Weekly. After taking over the management of his father's newspaper office in 1879, he started his own business, the Hubbard Typographical Union.
