Edwin Markham (September 3, 1876 – December 23, 1932) was a poet and writer, who wrote a number of books on American folklore and nature. He had a vast knowledge of nature and often had vivid descriptions of "the thunders of the woods, the cries of the field mice, the odor of earth from which grass grows, the song of birds in the springtime, the great river as it flows up from the gulf". In his collection of poems entitled Hoosac, published in 1909, he described how "the red hawk sails over his head" and wrote about the laughter of children at play.
