Edwin Hubble was an American astronomer who discovered the expansion of the universe in 1927 with his observations of Cepheid variable stars. Hubble is generally regarded as the greatest observational astronomer of the 20th century. He observed more galaxies than anyone else in the history of astronomy, and he observed more celestial objects in Milky Way galaxy than anyone else, including most comets, most asteroids, almost all moons of planets, and almost all observed supernovae. He discovered that galaxies are moving away from each other at a "Hubble Constant" rate, which implies the existence of a vast universe populated by billions of galaxies and many other mysterious objects such as quasars and pulsars; this suggests that the universe is expanding
He also discovered that other galaxies were receding from us at a similarly constant rate.
