In 1911, Edward's wife died of tuberculosis. In 1914, the First World War broke out and Edward joined the British Army as a Lieutenant. He served until 1919 when he was discharged with the rank of Captain.

He moved to Canada where he worked as a doctor before returning to England to take up a position at the Royal Free Hospital in London's East End. His work with tuberculosis patients brought him into contact with another doctor Dr Samuel Alexander, who introduced him to the teachings of Ernest Holmes, who was a follower of the universal law of attraction or law of thought formulating that all thought is creative. In 1923, after reading Ernest Holmes' book Science of Mind, Edward became a devotee himself and adopted Holmes' name for use in his professional life. In 1925, he set up his practise as a homeopath and practitioner of mental science in North London.

Edward died on 30th July 1932 at his home in Hampstead and is buried at Hampstead Cemetery in what is now known as the Memorial Garden (at grid reference: TQ131524).
