Edward Johnson was born in 1874, in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended the Boston Latin School until his graduation in 1893. He then entered Harvard University, where he graduated with an M.A. in 1896, and began teaching at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey
In 1897, he married Mary Johnson of North Carolina, who later became a well-known philanthropist. Their first child was born in 1899. They had two more children, Edward Jr., who died at age 3, and Barbara.
In 1903, Dr. Johnson began teaching at the Lawrenceville School again, but soon after he became very ill with tuberculosis and moved to Colorado to recover his health where he died on November 5th of that year at age 31.
