Edward graduated from Harvard University in 1841 and received an LL.B. degree from Harvard Law School in 1845. He practiced law for three years before his health broke down, forcing him to give it up. Hale served in the state legislature in 1845-46 and again in 1855-56.

He served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1857-58), as a United States Representative (1859-61), and as a United States Senator (1873-75). He married four times: first to Martha Tyler (1849–1928) with whom he had six children; second to Harriet Lane (1860–1939) with whom he had two sons; third to Mary Emerson (1851–1929) with whom he had five children; and fourth to Katherine Godwin (1872–1953) with whom he had two daughters. Hale died on May 10, 1889 at the age of seventy-three at his home in Swampscott, Massachusetts and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in nearby Salem, Massachusetts.
