D.W. Griffith was an American filmmaker, born in 1875, who revolutionized the art form with his innovations in film editing. His film epic The Birth of a Nation (1915) is the first full-length feature film to be produced in the United States. His later works include Intolerance (1916), Way Down East (1920), and Orphans of the Storm (1921)
Griffith also made one of the earliest sound films, The Musketeers of Pig Alley (1914). He moved to Hollywood in 1915 and continued to make movies until he died in 1948.
