Duane Henderson was born in Anderson, South Carolina. At an early age, he became fascinated with writing and by the time he was a teenager he had published his first poems and short stories in small magazines. In 1942, Duane enlisted in the United States Navy and served until 1946. After his discharge, he enrolled at the University of South Carolina and graduated from its School of Journalism
In 1950, Duane launched his writing career with a poem published in the Saturday Evening Post. His next book, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude, was published by Simon & Schuster in 1952. In 1954, he wrote Think and Grow Rich which became one of the best-selling books of all time.
