Alexis Carrel was a French surgeon who developed the first artificial heart in the early 20th century. He served as an officer in France's Third Republic during World War I. During that conflict, he developed the first means of artificially extending life beyond its natural limits, by implanting an artificial heart inside a dog. With his remarkable accomplishment, Carrel became known as "the father of transplantation."
