Dorothea Tanning was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1882. She studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and received her training in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens. She made four successful paintings for the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and became well-known for her unique depiction of African life
The African paintings were based on her travels through Africa in 1927 and 1928. Dorothea Tanning died in California in 1952.
