Diedrich Knickerbocker was born in 1610. He was the son of a wealthy Dutch burgher, Peter Knickerbacker. He learned the art of translation from his father, but soon developed an interest in journalism, which he practiced both in Dutch and English. He became well known to the public during the time of the Great Fire of 1664, which broke out on October 8th and destroyed much of Manhattan Island. After presenting his account of the fire in "The New-York Weekly Journal" (1667), he was elected to the office of "Register" for life. Knickerbocker's numerous books included "The New-York Weekly Journal" (1668), "A History of New York" (1689), "The Journal of Diedrich Knickerbocker" (1700) and "Historical Collections". He also wrote two plays: "Josephus", in 1679; and "Amphitryon", in 1683.
