Dennis Wheatley was born in Bradford, England. He became a journalist, leaving for India in 1885. After an adventurous journey through Asia, he travelled to the West Indies where he wrote for the newspapers. In 1897 he returned to England where he worked as a journalist until 1914
It was during this period that Wheatley began to write fiction, including The Haunting of Toby Jugg, which was later filmed by Alfred Hitchcock. His books have been translated into thirty-five languages.
