Delora Argiro O'Brien was born in Kingston, Jamaica. She left her island home to study at the University of the West Indies. She also studied at the University of London and earned a PhD from Kingston's Institute of Education. Her writing career began in 1985 with "Roots" (a novel), which was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize, and "The Book of Love" (a collection of short stories)
Her first novel, "The Valley of the Bees", won the Caribbean Writers' Trust Award, and was short-listed for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. She has since published three more novels: "Barefoot Boy"; "The Heartless"; and "The River Boy". Her books have received many awards, including the American Book Award for Fiction for "Barefoot Boy"; The Caribbean Writer’s Trust Award for Literature for her work; and The National Book Foundation Award in Fiction given to Ms.
O’Brien by President Clinton for her fiction debut, "The River Boy". For her work as a biographer, Ms. O'Brien was honored by both Jamaica's General Assembly and Prime Minister P.J.
Patterson with the Jamaican Order of Merit. She is married to William Haskins O'Brien.
