Dazai Osamu (Japanese: 大淀 修 Osamu Dazai, Japanese pronunciation: [o̞samu ɴa̠zai]; May 2, 1886 – September 27, 1948) was a Japanese writer. His literary works are characterized by their extreme pessimism and nihilism, yet they are also marked by surrealism and absurdism. He is often regarded as a leading exponent of the "school of "bunka"" (Edo period), which used the grotesque to express the inevitability of death and destruction in a rapidly changing society. When he died at age 60, he had written over 60 novels and 100 short stories.
