His main area of interest is World War II history, especially the history of the U.S. Navy's submarine service during World War II. He has authored or co-authored fourteen books on military history including The Secret History of U-571 (the only book ever published that describes exactly how the famous sub was captured) and The Phantom Submarine: Dönitz's Silent Submarine Fleet (the first book to describe all of Germany's secret undersea attack forces).

His latest project is The Last Battleship: The Life and Death of the USS Oklahoma (which will be released by Naval Institute Press in August 2011), which describes how this ship was sunk during battle with Japanese aircraft on December 7, 1941. He also wrote A Bitter Pill: A True Story of True Love, which follows three men who fell in love with the same woman at the same time during World War II. He lives just outside of Washington DC, where he is at work on his next book on submarine technology during WWII.
