Dr. Seamands is a retired research scientist, educator, and award-winning author of more than 25 books. A pioneer in the field of oceanography, he received his Ph.D. in oceanography from Columbia University in 1967
He served as Chief Scientist for Ocean Systems Research, Inc., until his retirement in 1995, when he founded the International Ocean Institute (IOI) in Washington, D.C., which he now chairs. Since its inception, IOI has become the foremost organization devoted to the establishment of international standards for ocean management and has established more than 100 standards covering topics such as marine pollution, water quality monitoring, fisheries management, marine ecosystem services, and sustainable development of the oceans. Dr.
Seamands is also the founder and former president of Adventure Cycling Association (ACA). He has received numerous awards for his work on behalf of cycling and has established cycling routes throughout North America and Europe.
