Dave went through several foster homes before spending the last five years of his childhood in a group home for emotionally disturbed children that was run by nuns. The conditions there were sub-human. Life at the group home was one of subservience and abuse, including beatings with bats and knives, sexual abuse by staff members, and emotional abuse by other residents.

Because of this horrible life, Dave ran away numerous times and lived on the streets for months at a time. As Dave grew older he began to fight back against much of the abuse and became the leader of an underground gang of boys who fought back against the nuns' abuse.
