Cornett earned his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, his M.S. in Chemistry from Ohio State University, and a Ph.D.

in Physical Chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1974. He joined the faculty at VCU in 1978 as an Assistant Professor in Chemistry and has been promoted to Full Professor since 1983 when he chaired his department from 1987 to 1990. Dr.

Cornett is a recipient of the VCU Board of Visitors' Distinguished Teaching Award, the VCU College of Engineering Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, and was named a "Teaching Excellence-Alumnus" by the VCU Alumni Association in 2000. In November 2000, he was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a national academic honor society in which only a small number of chemistry faculty members are inducted each year.
