After graduation, Dr. Dreesman worked for several years as a research engineer at the Illinois Bell Telephone System and then for a short time as an assistant to Edward Greenlaw, a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D.C., where he was recognized for his technical abilities and promoted to chief examiner in 1927.

In 1928, Dr. Dreesman returned to New York City and became assistant to the assistant general manager of the Bell Telephone Laboratories, New York Telephone Company, where he remained until 1930 when he accepted a position with AT&T's Western Electric Company as director of its Western Electric Laboratories in New York City and later director of its laboratories in Chicago and Kansas City before becoming manager of its Kalamazoo Laboratory in 1942 and then vice president and general manager of that facility (now AT&T's Bell Laboratories) from 1946 to 1949 when he returned to New York to become general manager of the telephone operating departments of the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T).
