In his youth, William Humphrey served as a Green Beret in Vietnam. He has also served as an intelligence officer and was a covert operations officer with the CIA
He started writing Ironweed during his senior year at college (by mail and typewriter) and completed it while serving on active duty as a U.S. Army intelligence officer in Germany and Vietnam. The book consists of two parts: Ironweed, about a Vietnam veteran named Henry Chinaski; and The Old Gringo, about the adventures of the real-life Cochise (Colonel John "Black Jack" Pershing).
