in biochemistry. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Western Ontario (Canada), Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), and the University of Florence (Italy). He was a visiting scholar at the University of Toronto and at Harvard University as well as a visiting scientist at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. He currently serves as a scientific advisor to the African Union Commission’s Department of Scientific and Technical Advice as well as to other African governments and international organizations including UNESCO and the World Bank . He is a senior member of both the Royal Society of Canada and the American Philosophical Society .

In addition to his academic research , Maksoud has published over 70 scientific papers on topics ranging from biology to medicine. The former editor-in-chief of Science & Education , he currently serves as its associate editor . In 2001, he established Africa’s first university-based biotech firm , Bio-Africa Limited , which commercializes research conducted at The King Faisal Specialist Hospital .

Maksoud also founded two other companies: Bio-Africa International Management Limited and Bio-Africa Development Limited . He has served on numerous non-profit boards including the World Food Programme Ethiopia, The World Bank USAID Ethiopia Region II, USAID Western Sahara, The National Council for Science & Technology Ethiopia, The Ethiopian Federation of Chambers of Commerce Ethiopia, The Wildlife Conservation Society – USA , The Chicago Council on Global Affairs , The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) , Africa Renaissance Center (ARC) , and several others. Maksoud has been actively involved in human rights issues throughout his life. He was twice named one of Africa's 100 most influential people by Time Magazine; was awarded Denmark's highest civilian honor (The Order Of Dannebrog); and was named one of Canada’s Top 40 under 40 by "Canadian Business" magazine.
