Cleanth Brooks is a renowned scholar of American literature and culture. Brooks was educated at Amherst College and the University of Chicago, where he earned his Ph.D. He taught at several universities before being appointed to the faculty of Yale University in 1957, where he remained until his retirement as Arthur Kingsley Porter Professor Emeritus in 1982. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967
