Claude Louis Berthollet was a French chemist. In 1799 he was appointed professor of chemistry at the École Polytechnique, where he worked with his friend Antoine Lavoisier. In 1801 he became a member of the French Academy of Sciences and in 1804 director of the Laboratory of Chemistry under Napoleon's government.
