C.J. Carlyon was born in Glasgow, Scotland, studied medicine at Glasgow University, and was appointed medical officer in the British Army in World War II. Postwar he was a medical officer in Dublin before moving to the United States in 1953 to become a psychiatrist. In addition to his many books, including "The Ugly Duckling," he has written for numerous periodicals, including the "Encyclopedia of Psychology," "Clinical Psychiatry," and "Glamorous Wisdom." He is a contributor to the Encyclopaedia Britannica and lives in New York City.
