Chinua Achebe was born in Ogidi, Nigeria, on 19 November 1930. He attended Government College Umuahia, where he studied English and history, before transferring to Government College, Ibadan, where he completed his first degree. There he received a Ph.D. in 1963 for his thesis "The Dynamics of an Epic: A Study of Chinua Achebe's 'Things Fall Apart'." He continued teaching at the University of Chicago until 1970 when he moved to Yale University as a professor of English and African Studies and served there until his retirement in 1996. Achebe was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999; he is the first African to receive the award and only the second writer from Africa (after Wole Soyinka). He is also one of only three people to have won both the Booker Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature (the other two being William Faulkner and Gabriel García Márquez).
