Chief Black Elk was born in the year of 1834 near the Black Hills in the Indian Territory. He belonged to the Oceti Sakowin Tribe, also known as the Sihasapa, who occupied the land that is now called the Pine Ridge Reservation. Chief Black Elk married his cousin. He began writing early in life and logged many of his experiences in "My Life, My Love." He died in 1920 at the age of eighty-two.
