Charles Samuel D'Monte was born in the West Indies in 1836. He began his working life as a planter and merchant trader in Barbados, and after several years in business, he went to the West African coast in search of new opportunities where he started trading with Nigerian merchants. In 1868, he established a trading house in Lagos and in 1873 he moved to Sierra Leone where he traded extensively in slaves and palm oil. In 1878, his wife and two daughters died in childbirth and D'Monte retired from active trading and settled down in the village at Freetown where he lived until his death.
