Charles Edwin Carruthers (1866-1930) was born in Lurgan, Ireland. He emigrated to the United States with his family in 1866, where they settled in Pittsburgh. He was appointed professor of political economy at the University of Pittsburgh in 1891; became assistant professor in 1895; and professor in 1902. After retirement, he served as dean of the medical school from 1915 to 1922. In 1922 he was appointed president of Elizabeth College for Women, a position he held until his death.

Professor Carruthers lectured extensively throughout the country on subjects relating to economics, politics, and education. He published many articles on economic theory and was an avid reader of current affairs magazines. He served as President of the American Association for Labor Legislation from 1910 to 1914; Vice-President of the National Association for Social Legislation from 1911 to 1925; Vice-President for a brief period in 1914; and a member of many other organizations concerned with social welfare reform and improving conditions for women and children.

Professor Carruthers made a number of important contributions to scientific literature. He published three books: The Labor Problem: A Survey from Its Origin to 1914 (Chicago, 1913) ; The Labor Problem: A Survey from Its Origin to 1928 (Chicago 1928) ; and The Labor Problem: A Survey from Its Origin to 1945 (Chicago 1945).
