C.H. Hamel was born in St Petersburg, Russia, the son of well-to-do German parents. From childhood he showed an interest in music and painting and took to calligraphy with ease. After completing his secondary education in St Petersburg, he went to Berlin where he studied architecture at the Technical University
On his return to St Petersburg he built a successful career as an architect and interior designer. He married his wife Antonia in 1859, who bore him four children, three of whom survived.
