Broken came to be through a series of events in my life. The first was a series of bruises I received at the tender age of twelve from a boy who found it amusing to pin me against a wall and then shove me toward a corner with his knee. The second was the death of my father when I was thirteen. Broken is a collection of stories about boys, girls, life, loss, love, and other things that make up the world around us. It's a book about how we cope with the small and large challenges we face every day, and how we react to them
It's a book about living in a society where people are constantly being judged for their appearance and morals. It's a book about being male or female, being gay or straight, being black or white, being different from the rest. Broken is also about seeing things that no one else can see. A few years ago I wrote an essay that was published in The New Yorker .
In it I mentioned that I had been bullied as a child and that it had been decisive in making me who I am today. That essay is now my first chapter in Broken . My editor wanted to know if I would write another essay for the book.
