Blanche Wiesen Cook (February 16, 1923 – September 29, 2005) was an American author, best known for her "New York Times" bestselling book, "The Women's Room", which chronicled her childhood in her mother's restaurant during the Depression. She grew up in the women's restroom of the Restaurant at 531 Main Street in Rockford, Illinois, which her mother ran. Cook became an anthropologist by writing about how gender is perceived by others and by studying the lives of women. Cook wrote more than twenty books, including "Wings to Fly: A Memoir of 'The Women's Room'" (1998). The book was later made into a movie starring Glenn Close, Kate Winslet and Minnie Driver.
