B.L. Brown began his career in 1965, when his first novel, A Time for Dying, was published by the University of Nebraska Press. Brown continued writing fiction and nonfiction until he retired in 2014, when he became an Associate Professor of English at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. During his long career, Brown has won numerous awards for his work including the Oklahoma Book Award (1985), the Oklahoma Higher Education Association's Distinguished Service Award (1997), the First Novelists' Prize (1998), and the Oklahoma Library Association's Distinguished Writer Award (2003)
He received a B.A. in English from Midwestern State University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Oklahoma (the first in the world to offer a Creative Writing program).
