He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned the degree of B.A. in 1868. He was ordained deacon in 1869 and priest in 1870.

He married Harriet Mary Branson on October 9, 1872. After having served nine years as curate at St Pancras Old Church in London, he became Assistant Vicar of St Luke's, Chelsea in 1878. He held this post until 1891 when he became rector of Lichfield Cathedral in Staffordshire for six years.

During this time he was also Chief Librarian for Lichfield Diocese and served as president of the British Library Association in 1893-1894. On his retirement from Lichfield in 1896 he returned to London where he served as Vicar of St James's Church, Piccadilly until his death on January 15, 1931.
