Bishop Francis Kelly, S.J., was born in 1868 in Dublin, Ireland, and studied at the Jesuit schools in that city. He left the Jesuit order in 1895 at the request of his superiors to become a full-time teacher in Dublin’s Lourdes Institute. In this position he founded the Catholic Young Men’s Society, an organization which has since become an internationally recognized Catholic youth movement. In 1903, Bishop Kelly founded the Legion of Mary, a lay Christian organization dedicated to teaching Catholic doctrine to young people
He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin in 1911, and Bishop of Limerick in 1919. He was made Cardinal by Pope Pius XI in 1925. During World War II he was Apostolic Administrator for Ireland.
After his death, Pope Pius XII declared him Venerable on March 26, 1947.
