Bertolt Brecht was born on August 3, 1898 in Augsburg, Germany. He was educated at the University of Munich and made his first mark as a writer in 1916 with his play Baal. Brecht's early work was influenced by Expressionism, but after World War I he became an avid champion of the "neue Sachlichkeit" ("new objectivity") movement in Germany. His ideas were revolutionary, but he never made any attempt to promote them or to develop them further. For this reason he distanced himself from the political developments in Germany after World War II.

Brecht died on December 14, 1956 in Darmstadt, Germany.
