  Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 – August 1, 1153) was a French abbot, preacher, poet, mystic, and the primary developer of the philosophy of Occult thought known as Christian Mysticism. He was a major influence on the development of the Counter-Reformation and Catholic mysticism. He is called "The Father of the Mystics" and "The Father of the Theosophists". His influence was so great that he has been referred to as "The Father of Christian Mysticism" by an esteemed contemporary authority on Christian mysticism, Hans Urs von Balthasar.
