He attended elementary school at P.S. 70 in the Bronx and high school at Cardozo School for Boys. He received a B.A.

in economics from Princeton University in 1975 and an M.A. in economics from the University of Chicago in 1977 where he studied under Robert Solow and Lawrence Klein, who were Nobel laureates in economics. He received a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1981 and a Ph.D.

in economics from Harvard University in 1987 for his work with Klein on dynamic macroeconomic models of economic growth and structural breakpoints in economic growth theory, which was published as a book with Cambridge University Press as The Breakthrough: The Economics of Structural Breakthroughs (1990). In 1988 Bernanke became a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), where he worked until 1993 when he joined the faculty at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School as a professor of economics and public affairs. In 1994 he became vice president and director of research at Salomon Brothers Inc., a Wall Street investment bank, where he remained until January 1999 when he began his term as chairman of the Federal Reserve Board for President Clinton's second term.  In July 2007, Bernanke became president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York after Governor Mark McCracken left to take up a position as vice chairman of Bank of America Corporation's global banking group, which was known as "the world’s most important bank".

In January 2009, President Obama nominated Bernanke to serve as Chairman of the Federal Reserve for a second term ending January 31st 2014, after which he would become vice chairperson under Janet Yellen until 1st January 2018 when Yellen will become Chairperson herself for her four year term ending January 31st 2024 .
