Bart Schultz was born in 1965 in Middelburg, Netherlands. He studied medicine at the Universities of Amsterdam and Utrecht. His research focused on the discovery of cellular signals in the nervous system and their role in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). He was a visiting researcher at the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, during which time he also served as a consultant to the research team that discovered the protein that causes ASD
In 2001 he established the Autism Center for Excellence (ACE) in Utrecht, a Dutch multidisciplinary research center for autism spectrum disorders. In 2009 he established the Bart Schultz Foundation to promote awareness and care for people with ASD, particularly children with ASD who have been neglected.
