She published her first novel at age 13 and by the time she was 15, she had written two more novels. After graduating from high school, she attended Temple University in Philadelphia where she earned a B.S. in English Literature.

After college, Barbara earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She then earned a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . She currently lives in Chicago with her husband, two children, and two dogs.
