Mrs. Bush began her initial career as a corporate spokeswoman for the Xerox Corporation in 1963. At age 43, she became the youngest person at that time to have held such a high position.

She also served as a director of the Houston Endowment and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. In 1981, Mrs. Bush was named Chairman of the U.S.

Volunteers International Foundation by President Ronald Reagan, which she founded in 1982. She is also on the board of trustees for The Texas Children's Hospital and is a member of the National Advisory Council for Excellence in Government awarded by President Jimmy Carter in 1979 and by President Bill Clinton in 1994. She has received honors from many organizations including The American Red Cross (Governor's Award), The Boy Scouts (Advancement Award), The Girl Scouts (Patriotism Award), The Society for Human Resource Management (Presidential Volunteer Service Award), and The United Way (Outstanding Volunteer).
