Aya Kanno is a Japanese filmmaker. She was born in Yokohama, Japan in 1972 and graduated from the Department of Film and Media at Sophia University in Tokyo in 1994. Since then she has worked as a screenwriter, director, and producer. Her films have been shown at film festivals including Cannes, Berlin, and Venice
Kanno's films include Hana yori dango (2000), a film about a high school girl who fakes her own death to get out of the business world and become a pop star, and The Mourning Forest (2002), which won the coveted Jury Prize at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. In 2005 she wrote and directed Paradise Kiss, her first film for adults. Her latest film is Aruku no Sora (2009), which won the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival in 2009.
In 2010 she wrote and directed Sparrows Dance (2010).
