Autumn Jordan is a British author and journalist. She is the author of the best-selling memoir "Black Is The New White: My Journey to Reinvent My Identity" (2009). Jordan's other books include "Ghetto Princess: The Untold Story of Diana Ross and the Making of Diana Ross" (2015) and "The Devil We Know: Black Magic, White Knights, and Jealous Lovers" (2012). Jordon writes that she has never known what her racial identity was until she read a story about U.S. Army Private Lynndie England who was given a life sentence for throwing a hand grenade at the feet of a dead Taliban fighter and laughing as he died
Until then, she had thought her race was white. Jordon said: "Every time I try to research my African-American roots – my mother's family – I'm bombarded with information about slavery, lynchings, Jim Crow laws, segregation, the invention of 'white' skin color." She said it is difficult to find out about her ancestors because most titles are in the public domain. Most are now available online but they are not searchable. Her book with Harvard University Press is set to be released in March 2016. Jordon is currently working on her next book with Harvard University Press about how young black women are influenced by social media platforms.
She said parents should teach their children about race and not wait for them to pick up about their identities on their own. Jordon also believes that society needs to adopt more affirmative action policies so that people can have more opportunities regardless of their race or gender.
