Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is a retired four-star general of Pakistan Army and the former chief of army staff. He was appointed by President Asif Ali Zardari on 21 September 2008. General Kayani is the first four-star chief of army staff of Pakistan Army to be appointed by an elected civilian government since General Yahya Khan's tenure in 1970s. He assumed office on 1 October 2008, and announced his decision to retire from the army on 30 June 2013, which was accepted by President Zardari
